IMO-certified fabrics for the Cruise Industry

The cruise industry has particularly high safety requirements - including for textiles. Fabrics used on board cruise ships, ferries or yachts must therefore pass special international fire safety tests. IMO (International Maritime Organisation) certification plays a key role in this.

IMO-certified fabrics fulfil strict requirements in terms of their fire behaviour. They are flame-retardant, produce only limited smoke in the event of a fire and help to significantly slow down the spread of fire. In use, this means maximum safety for passengers and crew - and compliance with international regulations for shipbuilding and equipment. In addition to the safety aspect, these textiles offer further advantages: they combine tested functionality with sophisticated design, high durability and ease of care. This results in textile solutions that not only withstand the special conditions at sea, but also create a high-quality and comfortable atmosphere on board.

Substances with MED authorisation

The terms IMO and MED are often used in the same context, but do not mean the same thing - the difference lies primarily in the type of regulation and authorisation.

"IMO tested" means: The substance has passed the relevant fire tests according to international standards.

MED (Marine Equipment Directive)
The MED is a European directive (EU) that is based on the IMO specifications, but regulates them specifically for the European market. It goes one step further:
A MED-certified fabric is characterised by the following:

  • They have passed the IMO tests
  • They have also been tested and monitored by a notified body
  • They are officially approved for use on EU-flagged ships

This can be recognised by the so-called wheelmark (steering wheel symbol).
